Chai

A rich, aromatic hot beverage perfect for a chilly morning or evening.

Ingredients

1–2 cinnamon sticks
5–10 cardamom pods
5–10 whole cloves
1 liter water

1 tsp black tea leaves
1 Tbsp granulated sugar

Directions

Break the cinnamon sticks and crush into small pieces in a mortar.  Remove the seeds from the cardamom pods and crack them in the mortar.  Crush the cloves in the mortar.  Place the crushed spices and the water in a pot.  Bring to a boil and simmer for ten minutes.

Combine the tea leaves and sugar in a small cup.

When the spices are finished simmering, remove the pot from the heat.  Stir in the tea leaves and sugar.  Allow to steep for five minutes.  If desired, strain before serving; most of the solids conveniently settle to the bottom.
